eNaira is ‘crippled‘: Nigeria in talks with NY-based company for revamp

After multiple attempts to create an efficient digital currency, the Central Bank of Nigeria is turning to a New York tech firm to revamp the underlying technology.

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has again developed and designed its CBDC eNaira, but this time it has called for reserves.

According to Bloomberg News on February 21st, CBN is in talks with a new "technical partner" to develop and design a new and improved system to manage eNaira.

The Nigerian financial government has discussed such a plan with the company's New York-based Technology Co., Ltd., according to people familiar with the matter.

New mobile software has also been developed for eNaria, allowing CBN to manipulate the advocacy; however, the unnamed source made it clear that the matter was kept secret.

The persistent efforts to establish eNaira began in 2021, with the support of the financial platform enterprise Bitt. It is not easy for the new partner to take over the role of pit bull immediately, but it will help Nigeria's central bank gain complete control gradually, the source said.

Bitt said in a statement that it is aware of CBN's collaboration with a variety of partners in technological innovation. The company confirmed that it still works closely with CBN and is "developing additional features and enhancements at this stage".

Although Nigeria is one of the earliest countries to run CBDC in China, the development of eNaira in Nigeria is slow and the selection rate is low. According to some sources, the frontier-breaking project is desperate, with only 0.5 per cent of Nigerians using CBDC.

In January of this year, a pioneer in Nigeria launched the country's first dynamic BTC lightning connection. Not long before that, the government announced plans to create a legal framework for the stabilization and initial sale of coins.

Nigeria is one of more than 90 countries exploring the use of CBDC. Other countries include Russia and Japan, both of which plan to issue their currencies by the summer. San Francisco is still studying and developing the probability of CBDC system software.

But CBDC has been well curbed by theme activists, who call CBDC a "regulatory" tool.
