UK gov't is hiring a central bank digital currency lead for Treasury team

The team lead will determine the “strategic direction” for Treasury’s efforts to develop a digital pound in line with the U.K. government’s agenda.

HM Treasury has begun to call on applicants to lead the Central Bank's digital currency elite team and apply the digital currency with unremitting efforts.

In a job released to LinkedIn on January 24, the UK Ministry of Finance also requested that the elite team of payment and internet finance should be composed of about 20 people to undertake the research and development of "potential digital elements". According to the post, the person in charge of CBDC will clarify the "strategic goal" of the Ministry of Finance to develop and design digital currency according to the agenda of government departments, and analyze the hidden policy issues for legislators.

"The Ministry of Finance and the Bank of England are working together through the CBDC research team to discuss the reasons for digital elements," the recruitment announcement said. "The Ministry of Finance and the Bank of England have promised to conduct joint consultation on hidden digital elements, and the successful candidate will lead the elite team of the Ministry of Finance after the announcement of the consultation, including cooperation with the Bank of England to consider the consultation response."

With the improvement of digital property area, many British legislators and industry leaders have expressed their willingness to withdraw two cents, or more accurately, two cents, to introduce CBDC. Tony Yates, a former consultant of the Central Bank of England, proposed to boycott CBDC in an interview in January, calling it "unworthy of accepting reality and risk". The incumbent chairman of the Federal Reserve of the United Kingdom is also sceptical about the digital dollar.

Britain has experienced an important transformation of its leadership, from the country's three presidents in a few months to the death of Queen Elizabeth II in September 2022. However, legislators are still taking into account relevant policies related to digital asset regulation and administrative law enforcement.

At the time of issuance, 16 applicants submitted to the CBDC post of the Ministry of Finance.
