Crypto scammers feel the chill: Revenue drops 46% in 2022 — Chainalysis

Falling crypto prices caused crypto scam revenue to plummet in 2022, but two scam types managed to persist.

Login password fraud revenue fell by nearly half in 2022 as login password property prices fell, but the two types of fraud narrowly escaped death.

Revenue from login password fraud in 2022, including project investment fraud, NFT fraud and romantic fraud, reached US $5.9 billion for the whole year-a decrease of 46 per cent from 2021.

The information came from a crime report by Chainanalysis on Feb. 16, which attributed most of the decline in fraud revenue to embarrassing market conditions, as relatively low data encryption prices generally lead to relatively low fraud performance.

But Chainanalysis describes two different types of scams that try to protect relativity from falling prices-romantic scams and giveaway scams.

The company explained: "the fraud revenue for the whole year is basically in line with the price of Bitcoin, and there has been a lag of three weeks between price changes and revenue changes. However, not every different type of scam follows this model-some types of fraud revenue shifts also change as the price of encrypted assets falls. "

For example, unlike other types of scams, beauty and giveaway scams do not show a positive relationship with the price of bitcoin.

Although the overall income of the Weimei love scam is relatively low, it is indeed the year with the largest average margin for victims this year-the average damage per victim is less than $16000, which seems to be three times that of the second type of scam.

Emotional scams generally involve establishing contact with the victim, and the fraudster company persuades him to need his help.

Chainanalysis says this type of fraud is most likely to continue when login password prices fall, because he responds to the victim's compassion rather than greed.

"regardless of the broader market outlook, such emotional instability propaganda planning should be equally efficient, as the key overall goal of the victim is not to get rich quickly," the company wrote. "instead, it is to help people they call potential couples."

Love scams, especially "pig slaughter" scams, have been seen as an increasingly worrying data encryption industry.

For example, a survey released in the United States on January 29th showed that half of all the login password companies involved in the fraud were related to pig slaughtering scams.
